We are Caroline and Dave Lewin the husband and wife duo that run Trunk Vintage Furniture which was born out of SW14. You may be wondering why the change of name-well when we decided to launch a website we realised that web search engines thought SW14 was a post code so you would never have found us unless you were in Google maps or house hunting – hence the need for a rebrand to take our next exciting steps.
So where to you start with re-naming your business so it conjures up images that reflect the nature of your business whilst retaining the family feel and means something personally to us?
Why Trunk I hear you ask – well that’s easy, it’s a nick name Caroline has had since she was 19 years old! (She is still coming to terms with seeing the words ‘Trunk’ and ‘Vintage’ together in the same sentence hence the potential name ‘Trunk’s Vintage Goods’ was rejected by her pretty quickly!)
We live and work out of the beautiful and tranquil setting in the grounds of Great Ote Hall, West Sussex. Our home and garden are a bit of an old curiosity shop, in fact a blend of individual and quirky pieces found whilst on jaunts around the countryside, particularly in Cornwall. We received many positive comments on our garden ornaments and house decorations so the idea came to us that perhaps we could recreate this in our work. So we bought a van, ditched the suits and headed for the markets and auctions with our dog Samuel Woofington.
Our original name , SW14 was in recognition of our beloved companion Samuel Woofington who passed into doggy heaven when he was 14 back in 2013. SW14 was created, very much in his honour. We quickly realised that the fun our road trips and adventures were not quite the same without the curiosity of a canine accomplice so we recruited the help of vintage cadet Tommy the Collie, a pup who is responsible for unexpected pit stops and off road foraging. You can follow his antics and our day to day activities via Instag
On our road trips we hand pick nostalgic and vintage items that have been previously loved and that are looking to be cherished and shared again. Whether it is flotsam and jetsam from rocky beach at Trevone bay, old wooden furniture from St Day or rusty objects of desire smuggled back from Kefalonia (honestly!!). We find pieces that have a story and that want to be enjoyed again.
Our new site allows us to share our adventures and tell the stories that lay behind the furniture, vintage toys and curiosities. It also enables us to share with you upcoming events such as our fairs, or the launch of new lines such as our canine additions within the Trunk family. And don’t forget to come and find us at vintage fairs In Sussex.. we will tell you where we will be and when.
Caroline sees the potential in the furniture pieces that we sell and Dave is the “fixer”. He has the skills to bring them back to life instead of looking a little tired and faded. In fact Dave is head of furniture and paint and Caroline is responsible for the smaller accessories such as the enamelware, garden pieces, old pine, beautiful china jugs and vintage toys and Tommy heads up the canine collection (well that’s how it works most of the time!)
